Impact of a Foundation in the Community

Impact of a Community Foundation

“Grand Forks has been very good to us. What better way is there to put back into the community than through the Community Foundation?” Jim & MaryDale Hansen

The Grand Forks/East Grand Forks and Region Community Foundation works to promote the betterment of our communities and the betterment of our everyday lives. Quietly but adeptly, the Foundation has been raising funds and awareness, managing funding campaigns, and offering technical assistance for people, projects and initiatives since the 1990’s. Many projects in our area have been touched by the Foundation:

Sherlock Forest Playground

The beautiful Sherlock Foest Playgroundsherwood_park_blog_post
Sherlock Forest Playground is located in East Grand Forks, Minnesota on 4th Avenue NW. Originally designed with the help of local elementary schools and built with community volunteers in 2003, it was well loved by children throughout the region. Sadly, in May of 2011, the playground was destroyed by fire. With the help of community volunteers, the playground was again rebuilt and is today, a busy place for local children. It is also not uncommon for out-of-the-area school children to enjoy field trips to the park each spring. Penny Pape and Katie Nelson spearheaded the reconstruction of the new playground and helped get it back to its former glory in short order. The playground, with picnic shelters and restrooms can be utilized spring, summer, and fall.

We love it when our grandpa and grandma take us to the Sherlock Forest Playground when we come to visit them. There isn’t anything like it where we live, so it’s a big treat for us! Sam, age 8

One Family’s Forever Gift
opp_photoGreg and Susan Opp

Greg and Susan Opp care deeply about helping others and giving back to their community, so they made a forever gift to fulfill that passion. The 40% North Dakota Tax Credit helped them achieve their goal to make a generous donation to North Dakota Hospice Programs. Personal experience with Hospice services left a lasting impression on their family and helped them realize how a steady stream of income is vital for the viability of a non-profit.

“Hospice has been a gift to several of our family members,” says Greg. “We wanted to make sure others in need receive such care.”

Greg and Susan give because they see the needs that exist and know they are blessed with the ability to make a difference. “The tax credit allowed us to give far more than we initially would have given. This is a true payback for us.”
